Based on Jiu Liu Falin's banned autobiographical novel, Lou Ye's 2011 French-language film Love and Bruises brings the acclaimed Sixth Generation auteur – who was banned from filmmaking in China at the time – to an entirely new environment: the gritty outskirts of Paris. Young teacher Hua (Corinne Yam) recently moved to France from Beijing. Alone in a foreign land, she falls into a sordid relationship with thuggish construction worker Matheiu (Tahar Rahim), who loves and abuses her with equal intensity. Lou strikes a searing balance of pain, desire and loneliness in Love and Bruises that transcends language and culture.
