Highly stylized, beguilingly languid and unapologetically anachronistic, Bertrand Bonello envisions an upscale, Belle Epoque-era Parisian brothel as a place suspended in time. With visuals worthy of a Klimt painting, the film, one of Cahier du Cinema’s top ten of 2011, portrays the opiated bordello as both a sanctuary and a house cursed by violence and disease. Nudity and sex is rampant, but it is Bonello’s genuine sense of compassion towards these sex workers, and the credible portrait of their camaraderie, that stays with you.
