In this biographical drama, the waning Manchurian dynasty crowns a young princess, but she is soon sent away to Japan. Adopting the name Yoshiko Kawashima (Anita Mui), she fully embraces Japanese culture. Exhibiting unusually eccentric and assertive behavior, she begins frequently dressing in men's clothes. Eventually, she marries a Mongolian prince, but has numerous affairs and becomes a Japanese agent, working closely with Chinese nationalist Fook (Andy Lau) back in her unfamiliar homeland.
